Cyprus International Dragon Boat Festival - Limmasol - 19th October 2019

Medals for Pershore Phoenix at the Cyprus International Dragon Boat Festival

5 Medals for Pershore Phoenix. Pershore raced a Seniors boat, a mixed boat and an Open boat and took 5 medals from this friendly and tough competition in the sun. It was October but the temperature was 28 C to 32 C which seemed to suit the locals but for Pershore it was both difficult and a nice warm interlude away from the UK weather.

The weather, the racing and the atmosphere was appreciated by everyone who travelled there.

We'll just have to wait and see - it certainly is a great event in a nice warm place.

World Championships - Pattaya, Thailand -  Wednesday 21st August to Sunday 25th August

Medals for Pershore GB Paddlers at the Worlds – A Remarkable Achievement.

Pershore Phoenix Dragon Boat Racing Club was lucky enough to have three of our members qualify to paddle for GB at the IDBF World Championships in Pattaya in Thailand from Wed 21st Aug to Sunday 25th Aug.  This self funded training and event (ie paid for by the paddlers and their families) involved training in their own time throughout the year, attending training days and weekends with paddlers from around Britain.

Pershore had two paddlers in the GB under18 squad and one paddler in the GB Senior B squad.

In total there were five GB squads that travelled to Thailand; the under18s, under24s, the Premier, the Senior As and the Senior Bs.

Competition at the Worlds in Thailand was fierce; two world records were broken; the under18 squad won two bronze medals and the Senior Bs one bronze.  This may not seem so much until it is noted that these three medals were the only medals won by all of the GB squads put together – and all three came back to paddlers from Pershore Phoenix.

See the Gallery Page for photos from the event - paddlers, drummers and supporters.

Additionally the under 18 squad beat many of the teams historical records – qualifying them as one of the best ever under 18 GB Dragonboat Squads.

2019 World Championships Thailand: RACE RESULTS

Nottingham National League Race - Sunday 14th July 2019

Two Pershore Phoenix teams for the Milton Keynes race day. Pershore Flyers, the Ladies team, and Pershore Phoenix ‘Open’ team.

This time Pershore Flyers had 10 paddlers available - a very respectable performance was put in considering the Flyers were racing against teams of 13 and 14 - Flyers finished behind but not 'left behind' - great things expected from the Flyers.

The Open team did well getting into the Plate Major competition again, lost out winning the final to Amathus by only 1sec and recording their best 200m time of the day - good going. - see results page.

Relay for Life - Evesham - Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th July 2019

In aid of CRUK (Cancer Research UK) and in support of people involved.

A fantastic 24hour hour walking (running if you like) relay – each team entered maintains someone walking around a circuit from 10am Saturday morning until 10am Sunday morning.

Events and games held during the day, live music and then later Saturday evening a silent disco (headphones tuned to its own ‘radio station) while you walk.  An event that really was fun and poignant at times too.

We all ended the event very tired indeed but having had a great time too.

London Hong Kong Festival - King Albert Dock - Sunday 30th June 2019

A huge event with fewer races than usual however Pershore put in an excellent performance. See race results page for race times.

Team came away with (BLING!) a nice Trophy.

Pershore Bell Boat Regatta - Sunday 22nd June 2019

Pershore Phoenix didn’t paddle at this event 'as a Pershore Phoenix team' but after a friend’s team lost most of their paddlers due to unfortunate circumstances a few that could, stepped in to help - that was after Sharon made it happen.  The team – “Moreton 5 0” didn’t win but did surprisingly well for a team that until the last minute were going to have to drop out.   Terrific fun to help out and a great day out in Pershore was had by all - well done to the organisers of the day. If it doesn’t clash would like to take part in the next one

Liverpool National League Race - Sunday 16th June 2019

Pershore Phoenix race team did not attend, however some attended to help other teams: Bristol Empire Dragons, Henley Dragons and Powerhouse (from Stockton).

The results are too numerous to list here (see: but an excellent day was had by all.

Milton Keynes National League Race - Saturday 1st June 2019

Enough people were available for two Pershore Phoenix teams for the Milton Keynes race day. Pershore Flyers, the Ladies team, and Pershore Phoenix ‘Open’ team.

A great days racing with some pleasing results - see results page.

Stockton-on-Tees National League Race - Sunday 5th May 2019

Pershore Phoenix race team could not attend due to low availability of paddlers however some of the team did travel to Stockton and were rewarded with seats in the St Neots boat: and the Henley boat, St Neots results below:

A fantastic days racing was had in beautiful weather racing against a breeze - some great contacts made with other teams.

The 200metre races were first.

1min 12.26secs                  with us, Pershore guests, not in the this race

1min   9.73secs                  result with ‘added Pershore’ (thank goodness the boat didn't go slowerer) – qualifying for Cup Semi 3

1min 12.59secs                  qualifying St Neots for the Cup Tail Final

1min 10.25secs                  making it 2nd place in the Cup Tail Final.

The team swapped many people in and out of the boat but the result was a very happy crew.

For the 500metre races the times were:

2mins 12.89secs

2mins 11.56secs                (faster !) qualifying St Neots for the Cup Semi 3

2mins 16.50secs                in the semi final (getting slower) but still qualifying for the Cup Tail Fianl

2mins 17.53secs                making it 2nd place in the Cup Tail Final (a tired but again happy crew)

More Pershore Team people also joined the Henley boat however the results are too numerous to list here (see:, an excellent day was had by all.

Worcester National League Race - 14th April 2019

Ladies Team – Pershore Flyers.  This was the first league race for the Pershore Flyers. The Pershore team of 12 raced against other teams of 15 and 16 paddlers over a race distance of 200metres. The Flyers made a good start showing excellent timing, lower number of paddlers seemed to have made very little difference as the team kept pace with the opposition; in the middle section of the race however the number of paddlers began to show with Pershore dropping back slightly.  Pershore crossed the line 3rd but a very respectable close 3rd. Pershore Flyers put in a good performance that the club are very proud of – grateful for the points too.

The Open Team took part in four 200metre races and finished 3rd in the Plate Major Trophy.  The 200metre race results left Pershore about three quarters of the way down the leader board which was not the worst but this did not reflect what the Open team can really do.

The Worcester ‘City Loop’; a 1.8km race from the railway bridge downstream to the Diglis Hotel for a full speed race turn then back to the railway bridge.  This time the Pershore team made a quick start and with the Thames boat in front as a target began with a purpose. Reeling in the Thames boat took some time but when Thames took the race turn a little wide Pershore made a competent turn and never saw the Thames boat again. Pershore picked up the pace and raced for the finish line taking another slower boat on the way. The team crossed the finsh line still strong to take 1st place; a satisfying result and placing the team closer to where the club expected

Many thanks to Worcester Dragons and the BDA (British Dragon Boat Racing Association) for hosting a great days racing.

Many thanks to Wayne from Henley Dragons for helping us out by helming the 1.8km race.
