Dragon Boat Racing:
A Sport with a Splash of History!

Ever seen those long, colourful boats slicing through the water, powered by a synchronised team of paddlers? That's Dragon Boat Racing, and it's a spectacle you won't soon forget! But did you know it's not just a modern sport? It's got roots stretching back over 2,000 years to ancient China.
From Ancient Rituals to Modern Races
Imagine ancient Chinese villagers, over two millennia ago, taking to the water on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. They weren't just out for a leisurely paddle; they were participating in a ritual to ward off misfortune and bring on those much-needed rains. And at the heart of it all was the dragon, a powerful symbol of water, ruling rivers, seas, and even the clouds.
Then came the legend of Qu Yuan, a poet banished from his kingdom. When he learned of his kingdom's defeat, he plunged into the Mi Lo River in sorrow. The villagers, who loved him dearly, raced out in their boats, beating drums and splashing oars, trying to save him. This tale adds a layer of heartfelt emotion to the vibrant tradition.
The Thrill of the Race
Fast forward to today, and you'll find teams of up to 20 paddlers, a drummer keeping the beat, and a helm guiding the 40-foot boat. The energy is electric – the drums, the shouts, and the splash of paddles as teams race down the course. It's a feast for the senses, whether you're watching or paddling!
A Global Phenomenon
The "modern era" of Dragon Boat Racing kicked off in the 1970s, thanks to the Hong Kong Tourist Association. What started as a local festival quickly spread worldwide. Today, with the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) at the helm, this sport has exploded.

Did you know that millions people participate in China?
-
Hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the sport in Europe, including the UK, Germany, Czech, Hungary, Poland and Russia.
